108 Self-Injury in Jails: Insights and Practical Strategies to Support Change
Description

Safety is a primary objective in every jail, yet non-suicidal self-injury can significantly compromise that goal. These behaviors strain limited resources, create risk, and pose serious concerns for the individuals involved. Reducing NSSI requires more than awareness—it demands an understanding of where these behaviors originate, how they are reinforced by the environment, and how an individual’s internal experiences contribute. This session will examine how NSSI “works” for the individual and how targeted, practical adjustments in our responses can reduce these behaviors over time. Participants will learn why effective approaches go beyond education or consequences and instead focus on recognizing the individual’s ambivalence and internal struggle. By working with—not against—that ambivalence, staff can help set the stage for meaningful behavior change and support safer, healthier alternatives.
