Dr. Lorraine M Smith, RN, DNP, MSN, RN, CCHP is an assistant professor at University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. She recently retired from clinical practice as a weekend nurse clinician 2 at a 1,500-bed, medium-security prison in Wisconsin. She has worked in correctional health care for the vast majority of her professional nursing career in county jail, county juvenile detention, and state prison facilities for over 25 years. Dr. Smith teaches both RN and traditional undergraduate senior nursing students pursuing their BSN degrees, as well as graduate students pursuing a doctorate of nursing practice. Dr. Smith holds both master's and doctorate nursing degrees focusing on nursing administration. Dr. Smith was selected to the 2017 American Nurses Association steering committee on Moral Resilience where a call to action and tool kit was created after a thorough review of literature. Dr. Smith has also received the Ihle Award for Caring from University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire College of Nursing and Health Sciences. She also has a certificate in legal nurse consulting and has consulted attorneys on matters of correctional heath nursing care. The two biggest highlights of Dr. Smith's correctional health career include the opportunity to shake hands with Dr. Armond Start and Dr. Jaye Anno. Dr. Smith learned about legal Issues in correctional health through Dr. Armond Start from University of Wisconsin College of Medicine in Madison while pursuing her master's degree in nursing. While attending a NCCHC National Conference, she personally met Dr. Jaye Anno, and considers it a privilege to have personally met and known these two pioneers in the field of correctional health. Dr. Smith also received the Colleen and Tom Nevins College of Nursing Faculty Development and Scholarship Award to continue research efforts on moral distress and moral resilience in prison nurses.
