The Experiences of Incarcerated People in Accessing Mental Health Care: A Qualitative Meta-Ethnography
Description
Despite the prevalence of mental illness in correctional facilities, little is known about how people who are incarcerated experience the mental health care they receive. This study used a meta-ethnographic approach to analyze the findings of seven qualitative studies regarding the experiences of people who are incarcerated in accessing mental health care. Five core themes were identified: stressful incarceration environments, lack of resources, care is not patient centered, lack of trust, and the value of therapeutic relationships.
