P06 Paradigm Shift: Perspectives on Homelessness and the Opioid Crisis*
Description

Addiction has devastated cities, small towns, and suburbs across America. Illegal drugs entering the country and the abuse of prescription opioids have also substantially contributed to an unprecedented homeless population. Substance abuse, mental illness, and deaths have permeated the country, leaving few locations unscathed. These complex issues have directly impacted jails and prisons, but the problems do not end at their doorstep. After decades of detox and medically supervised withdrawal of inmate patients, correctional facilities have changed course. The speakers will explain pros and cons of this paradigm shift and help us deal with these philosophical/social changes and practices. Participants will gain an increased knowledge of the opioid crisis’ impact on administrators and health care professionals in corrections today. 2.5 CE credits
