419 Self-Injurious Behaviors: Assessment and Management*

Self-injurious behaviors are common but quite challenging events for both health care and security staff in the correctional setting. Distinguishing self-injurious behaviors from suicidality is difficult but possible. Evaluations of self-injury that incorporate classifying the type of self-injurious behavior and identifying the underlying psychiatric diagnosis can significantly aid in effective management and treatment.
