Amy Whelan is a Senior Staff Attorney at the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Amy litigates complex cases around the country regarding civil and constitutional matters. Amy represented Adree Edmo, a transgender woman housed in the Idaho Department of Corrections who was denied gender affirming surgery. The court ruled the denial of care violated the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment, which was upheld on appeal. Ms. Edmo became the first person in the country to receive court-ordered surgery in prison. Amy received her bachelor's degree from Princeton University and her juris doctorate from Northeastern University School of Law.
