Ms. Jo Burton is a proud Australian indigenous Wiradjuri woman who has been a nurse for 39 years, is committed to a social justice nursing philosophy, and has been working in prisons for the past 20 years. Ms. Burton currently holds dual roles as a nurse practitioner with Justice Health & Forensic Mental Health Network (JH&FMHN) and as a nurse academic with the University of Newcastle. She is currently undertaking doctoral studies with the University of Sydney, researching the professional identity of the custodial health nurse. Promoting custodial health nursing through research and community of practice, with the ultimate aim of creating a specialist custodial health nursing role, has been Ms. Burton’s passion. At the root of all she does is the goal of improving the health outcomes for the marginalized and disadvantaged people for whom she cares. Ms. Burton also holds master’s degrees in nursing and indigenous health. Being recognized as JH&FMHN employee of the year in 2019 was a highlight of her custodial health nursing career as it acknowledged her commitment to nursing through a social welfare lens.
