Individuals in segregated housing exhibit increased risk of psychiatric decompensation. Additionally, manifestation of many of these psychiatric symptoms and disorders tends to increase the risk of other-directed violence, thus prolonging the person's time in isolation. It is important to identify and understand decompensation in segregation while offering alternatives to isolated housing in order to ensure safety of patients and staff.
