129 Principles and Practice of Correctional Geriatric Psychiatry*

The older and aging patient population is the fastest growing group in U.S. correctional settings, with growth rates projected to continue to rise. It is essential for medical, mental health, and administrative correctional professionals to be informed of the unique issues impacting management of this vulnerable population. By focusing on geriatric psychiatry principles and their translation to a correctional setting, suggestions to meet these challenges will be discussed.

  • Review the epidemiology of the elderly incarcerated population and prevalence of comorbid medical and mental health conditions
  • Discuss psychotropic medication management and principles as applied to the geriatric population
  • Examine potential environmental interventions in the custodial setting beyond pharmacotherapy
