140 End-of-Life Care in Jails: A Panel Discussion*

Health care at the end of life poses a complex set of medical, psychiatric, legal, and ethical challenges complicated further when a patient is incarcerated. This discussion will cover key components of end-of-life care including advanced directives, alternate decision makers, provider orders for life sustaining treatment, and considerations for applying these components in the jail setting. Case studies will highlight clinical aspects as well as considerations for policy development.

  • Describe scenarios in which end-of-life care may be indicated for people who are incarcerated in jails
  • Differentiate between key components of end-of-life care planning including advanced directives, alternative decision makers, and provider orders for life sustaining treatment
