102 Mastering the Mock Up: Facilitating Effective Emergency Preparedness
Description

Man-down emergencies are often the first true test of staff readiness to respond to life-threatening situations. Preparing staff to act effectively—and to manage their own reactions—requires training that is realistic, immersive, and engaging. This session explores how well-designed emergency drills can strengthen confidence, coordination, and performance under pressure. Participants will examine the key domains of realism—physical, conceptual, emotional, and experiential—and learn practical strategies for incorporating each into emergency simulations. The concept of the fiction contract will be introduced, along with techniques for capturing attention and suspending disbelief. Methods to enhance realism include setting the scene, using moulage, and designing simulated environments that engage multiple senses, such as sight, sound, and smell. The session will also address creating a psychologically safe learning environment and conducting effective debriefings. Participants will learn how to set goals, explore reactions and facts, and translate insights into actionable plans for improvement that support readiness and continuous improvement.
