Secondary and vicarious trauma can be insidious, affecting us psychologically, physically, and interpersonally. They may result from a one-time encounter or from cumulative exposure to incarcerated individuals' traumas. Ethics codes clearly indicate that all clinicians have a responsibility to recognize the signs of secondary and vicarious trauma in ourselves and in our colleagues.Secondary and vicarious trauma will be explored, along with ways to recognize their effects and strategies for realistically coping to reduce their impact on ourselves and on our work with patients.
