Primary polydipsia, or psychogenic polydipsia, is a highly disabling disorder characterized by an increase in thirst, most often seen in association with psychiatric illnesses like schizophrenia. There have been numerous reported occurrences of water intoxication in the correctional setting, with outcomes ranging from significant morbidity to mortality in some extreme cases. This session will explore the key principles in management of the incarcerated psychiatric patient with primary polydipsia, including monitored fluid restriction, as well as behavioral and pharmacological modalities.
