Dr. Stephanie Gangemi is a clinical assistant professor and director of the Bachelor of Social Work program in the University of Colorado Colorado Springs School of Public Affairs. She is a licensed clinical social worker in Colorado who holds a PhD in social work from Smith College School for Social Work (2021), a master's degree in social work from Columbia University School of Social Work (2008) and a Bachelor of Arts from Wagner College (2006). Dr. Gangemi brings over a decade of social work practice experience as well as academic teaching experience. She worked for over 10 years in correctional mental health at Riker's Island as well as serving as the director of mental health at the El Paso County Jail. She has taught social work courses at University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Smith College, Newman University, Pikes Peak Community College, and Wagner College, including courses on forensic social work and personality disorders. Her clinical practice has included work with incarcerated people with severe and persistent mental illness, the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders, and suicide risk assessment and treatment. Her research is on the training and experience of treatment staff members in jail and prison. Dr. Gangemi was also the 2018 first-place winner of the international Seidenberg Paper Prize on proposed solutions to issues between guards and inmates.
