The Delaware Department of Correction launched the Certified Peer Support Specialist program to augment staff efforts to support people with mental health or emotional concerns. The CPSS peers have helped security and behavioral health staff by de-escalating events, helping new arrivals to navigate the system, and reducing grievances and mental health calls. Through a phased approach, the peers have gained buy-in from staff and leadership to improve the environment.
