Name
418 Correctional Research Policies: Assessing the Status Quo and Improving Practices*
Description

The incarcerated population is often excluded from research and is at increased risk of coercion; including them in research, however, can inform interventions to improve their health outcomes. Many carceral systems have developed policies to govern research within their facilities, but these policies vary widely. This study collected and described research policies for state prison systems and the largest county jail in each state; findings inform best practices for carceral system research policies.

Educational Objectives

  • Discuss why incarcerated populations are often excluded from research
  • Examine factors that influence the content carceral facilities include in their research policies
  • Identify key ethical and legal considerations when creating a research policy in a correctional system
