450 Managing Co-occurring Chronic Pain and Substance Use Disorder*
Description
Addiction and pain are interrelated, with each condition influencing the treatment of the other. People with co-occurring pain and substance use disorder have the right to be treated with dignity and respect and receive evidence-based, high-quality assessment and management for both conditions using an integrated, holistic, multidimensional approach. This presentation will discuss strategies for acute and chronic pain management in the context of medication for OUD treatment (e.g., with methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone).
Educational Objectives
- Identify fundamental concepts of acute and chronic pain management, including mechanisms of pain and appropriate pain assessment
- Describe a framework for acute pain management in the context of substance use disorder, especially opioid use disorder
- Design an appropriate and effective treatment plan for SUD patients who are experiencing pain
