Name
464 Insulin Pumps in Corrections: Protocols, Implementation, and Outcomes*
Description
Insulin pumps are the standard of care for many with type 1 diabetes and some with type 2 diabetes. Pumps are clinically complex, operate via wireless technology, and require that patients have an insulin cannula and a controller device, making pumps challenging to use in correctional systems. Presenters will describe the implementation of an insulin pump protocol across a large state prison system, present clinical outcomes, and share resources that other systems can use to introduce insulin pumps.
Educational Objectives
- Explain how insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors work and indications for their use
- Discuss the challenges and benefits of the use of insulin pumps within a carceral system
- Identify resources to support the introduction of an insulin pump protocol
