Name
479 Opioid Use Disorder Assessment in Prisons*
Description
Initiating treatment for opioid use disorder during incarceration necessitates identifying who has opioid use disorder. OUD screening and assessment often rely on self-report, which is complex in prison, and there are few validated tools specific to the prison setting. This study used 45 qualitative interviews with prison staff and currently and formerly incarcerated people to understand how to improve OUD assessment processes in state prisons.
Educational Objectives
- Discuss the complexity of opioid use disorder assessment in a carceral setting
- Describe how incorporating patient feedback could improve OUD screening and diagnostic strategies
- Explain how to use implementation science methods to inform the development of new screening strategies
