Speaker Bio
Ms. McKenna Gessner is a medical student and an aspiring obstetrician-gynecologist currently finishing her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. A native Houstonian, she completed her Bachelor of Arts in women's and gender studies and plan II honors at the University of Texas at Austin. During her medical school career, Ms. Gessner started a partnership with the Harris County Jail to allow medical students to teach health classes to incarcerated populations weekly to supplement their engagement with that patient population within the Harris Health System at Ben Taub Hospital. The project, known as the Justice-Involved HEAL Initiative, developed into a student-run organization with workshops, lectures, and book clubs for students interested in exploring the intersection of incarceration and health. The HEAL Initiative serves as a network for those at Baylor College of Medicine who are interested in improving care for the incarcerated.
