Research has identified previous incarceration as a key factor that increases the risk of opioid overdose. Because the U.S. has the world's highest per capita rate of incarceration, it is crucial that we study overdose risk factors in this population. In our study we speak to expert panels of people with lived experience of incarceration and overdose to identify risk and protective factors that the literature may be missing.
