P05 10 Ways to Prevent Suicides: Even When You're Doing Everything Right*
Description

Many jails are experiencing suicide attempts--and suicide deaths—even when they have a good suicide prevention program in place (e.g., screening, monitoring, smocks, safe housing, mental health). To reduce suicidal behavior and deaths, as well as avoid suicide-related lawsuits, we must tweak and adjust current suicide prevention practices.

This session will focus on 10 strategies medical and mental health professionals can undertake to help strengthen and improve existing suicide prevention strategies. Clinicians, managers, and administrators will gain up-to-date information, debate current controversies, and learn new skills related to suicide prevention they can immediately implement in their jail or prison.

This interactive session includes video clips, photographs, audience participation and activities, as well as lessons learned from correctional suicide litigation.
