133 Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement: A New Intervention for Addiction and Pain*
Description

Correctional settings provide an opportunity to treat people suffering from opioid use disorder, many of whom began using opioids for chronic pain. Mindfulness-oriented recovery enhancement (MORE) was designed to simultaneously address addictive behavior, psychiatric distress, and chronic pain, making it ideal for correctional settings. This session will detail the theory underlying the MORE treatment approach, research data demonstrating its effectiveness, and unique clinical skills integral to this novel approach.

Educational Objectives
  • Identify three cognitive, affective, and neurobiological mechanisms that drive addiction, psychiatric disorders, and chronic pain
  • Explain the theoretical framework underpinning mindfulness-oriented recovery enhancement
  • Describe three techniques to reduce craving, regulate addictive behavior, decrease negative emotions, and manage pain
