Nursing schools in the United States have not generally included correctional settings in students’ clinical rotations – despite the fact that the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education emphasizes the importance of immersion experiences to focus on populations of interest and clinical roles, such as correctional health care, and despite the importance of addressing health disparities, health inequities, health literacy, and social determinants of health in the delivery of health care to underserved populations. To address those issues, one school of nursing in Southeast Texas developed a population health clinical rotation that gives senior-level student nurses the opportunity to focus on delivering care to justice-involved patients in a variety of outpatient clinics in a correctional health care facility. This presentation will highlight the efforts in this endeavor.
