Name
143 Reducing Problem Behavior Through Behavior Management Plans: An Evidence-Based Approach*
Description

As self-injurious behavior has increased, so has the need for behavior modification plans (BMP). But due to insufficient training, BMPs are not being produced through an evidence-based and systematic approach, thus decreasing their efficacy. This talk will review the research on the scientific process of conducting BMPs; discuss use of a preference assessment to identify individualized reinforcers likely to result in alternative, healthy behaviors; and review two cases of implemented BMP.

Educational Objectives

  • Describe behavioral interventions that will decrease undesirable behaviors and increase appropriate behaviors in correctional environments
  • Examine the use of preference assessments to determine which reinforcers the patient is more likely to respond to
  • Distinguish between pseudo- and scientific- approaches to completing a BMP
