160 Providing Affirming Care: A Multidisciplinary Approach*
Description

Providing client-centered care in a dynamic, affirming way is challenging. Barriers include provider bias, desensitization, and burnout. Discussion will focus on elements of creating an environment of trust, strategies to involve all disciplines in the process of client-centered care, awareness of hot button issues including working with individuals who have traumatic brain injury or are gender dysphoric, transgender, or gender diverse.

Educational Objectives

 

  • Discuss the myths about incarcerated people that contribute to desensitization
  • Describe gender-affirming care and strategies to provide support in therapeutic relationships
  • Evaluate our own bias and belief systems, and how they may affect how we provide care
