RT -10 Designing Normative Environments in Corrections

Mental health care in the correctional environment has increasingly focused on design-based strategies. This talk will present a case study that successfully balanced normative environments while maintaining the correctional system's effectiveness. A panel of architects and a health care professional will discuss correctional health care design experiences and views, to include the design of secure environments for high acute through subacute mental health care and infirmary patients.

Educational Objectives

  • Describe the design and facilitator process for identifying any adverse mental health environmental risk factors
  • Explore how the built environment affects patients as well as health and corrections staff to create better outcomes
  • Cite the design elements that define a normative correctional health care environment as differentiated from a general population environment
