RT -10 Designing Normative Environments in Corrections
Description

Mental health care in the correctional environment has increasingly focused on design-based strategies. This talk will present a case study that successfully balanced normative environments while maintaining the correctional system's effectiveness. A panel of architects and a health care professional will discuss correctional health care design experiences and views, to include the design of secure environments for high acute through subacute mental health care and infirmary patients.

  • Explore how the built environment affects patients as well as health and corrections staff to create better outcomes
  • Cite the design elements that define a normative correctional health care environment as differentiated from a general population environment
