117 Serious Mental Illness: The Impact on Individuals and Systems*
Description

Jails are the largest provider of behavioral health services in the U.S., making accurate identification and treatment of serious mental illness critical for improving outcomes and reducing recidivism. However, SMI definitions vary widely across jurisdictions (both prisons and jails). This presentation explores appropriate strategies for defining SMI, implementing clinical policies to ensure appropriate treatment, and developing operational policies to protect individuals from harmful placements like restrictive housing. Practical examples will illustrate evidence-based approaches to system-wide SMI management.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the rate of SMI across jails and prisons
  • Identify appropriate treatment for SMI to improve outcomes
  • Discuss best practices for ensuring proper clinical care of and protecting patients with SMI
