145 A Skills-Based Approach to Managing Distress and Regulating Emotions*
Description

Research indicates that incarcerated individuals have experienced high rates of trauma, which correlates with long-term negative outcomes. This presentation will focus on the impact of trauma on the body, including the brain and the nervous system. Potentially negative outcomes in a correctional setting of a dysregulated nervous system will be explored, and skills to regulate the nervous system will be examined from a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy perspective. Participants will learn skills that can be applied to achieve better emotional regulation over all, as well as skills that can be used in a moment of crisis to downregulate emotions.
