149b Innovative Approaches to Reducing Overdose Mortality*
Description
Alberta in western Canada has experienced high fentanyl-related overdose mortality, particularly among individuals with histories of incarceration. To address this, the provincial correctional health system implemented admission opioid screening, telehealth consultations, near same-day treatment induction, medication management strategies, and discharge supports. These interventions have reduced postrelease overdose mortality by over 50%. This presentation reviews system challenges, solutions, and outcomes, highlighting effective approaches to screening, access, and improved opioid addiction care.
