LCDR Nicole Townsend is an active-duty United States Public Health Officer detailed to the Immigrations and Customs Health Service Corp within the Department of Homeland Security. She is the program manager for the Nursing Services Unit (NSU), directly supporting the chief nurse and regional nurse managers. NSU's mission priority is to promote and advance health care delivery to undocumented migrants, a historically vulnerable and underserved population. The NSU is responsible for oversight, training, and education of approximately 500 nurses located at detention center sites all over the United States. LCDR Townsend has 18 years of nursing experience, both clinical and supervisory. She holds a baccalaureate degree in nursing and a master’s degree in health administration. LCDR Townsend has received several awards and medals for her service within the Public Health Service, recognizing work as a nurse during several deployments including recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, assisting with the unaccompanied minor missions, and several COVID-19 pandemic-related missions such as setting up testing sites and providing direct patient care in underserved hospitals.
