419 Dental Antibiotic Stewardship and Use
Description

Overprescribing and misprescribing of antibiotics has led to an alarming and dangerous rise in infections caused by antibiotic-resistant organisms, for which effective treatments are difficult, more toxic, expensive, and sometimes nonexistent. This presentation addresses the proper prescribing of antibiotics for odontogenic infections and for antibiotic prophylaxis based on the latest ADA clinical practice guidelines.

  • Review the current clinical practice guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis and antibiotic use for odontogenic infections
  • Evaluate the risks and benefits of antibiotic use including antibiotic resistance and C. diff infection.
  • Summarize antibiotic best practices in a correctional setting
