Suicide is the leading cause of death in jails, occurring at a rate far higher than in the general population. Clinical interventions and housing decisions can improve outcomes, but vigilance by all personnel can mean the difference between life and death. This presentation will provide an overview of the current literature on suicide and appropriate terminology, as well as risk assessment and mitigation processes in jail settings. We will discuss the importance of collaboration between clinical and custody staff while highlighting a process implemented to reduce high-risk, self-injurious behaviors at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.
