As altered mental status becomes more prevalent in corrections, inclusive training for nursing and custody staff is crucial. The presenters will discuss the sequelae of the disease, differentiate a medical versus mental health diagnosis, how to determine if the patient requires emergency medical attention or mental health interventions, the importance of early intervention, and results of a late or missed diagnosis. A review of case studies and current guidelines will also be presented.
