This presentation will review the factors that can increase or decrease an individual’s risk for suicide while incarcerated. Traditional methods of restricting clothing, reading materials, visits, and treatment
groups likely result in underreporting of suicidal ideation. New, more humane methods that promote safety while engaging the individual in treatment will be presented. The discussion will include case studies
and a comprehensive suicide prevention program, including training, screening and evaluation, crisis response, treatment and intervention, documentation, and debriefing.
