RT-3 PREA Through Her Eyes: Perceptions of Safety and System Response
Description

This session explores the perceptions of incarcerated women regarding the Prison Rape Elimination Act, based on 44 confidential interviews conducted as part of a DOJ settlement agreement. Using the constant comparative method, the study examined views on PREA awareness, sexual safety, and system responsiveness. Findings revealed that many participants perceive PREA as being weaponized for retaliation. The session highlights the need for gender-responsive reforms grounded in the lived experiences of those impacted.
