303a When Words Aren't Safe: Engaging Emotion Through Imagery
Description
In correctional settings, "talking about it" can feel risky. This Lightning Talk introduces imagery as a safer path to emotional processing when narrative disclosure is limited. Drawing on trauma-informed work with incarcerated men, learn how to use symbolic imagery to access emotion, recognize patterns, and track change without requiring direct disclosure. A practical micro-method and ethical guidance are included to support immediate use in brief, high-constraint clinical encounters.
Educational Objectives- Explain how surveillance, stigma, and institutional constraints limit autobiographical disclosure in correctional settings
- Differentiate emergent from established imagery and their applications
- Apply a method for using established imagery to support regulation and readiness for change without narrative disclosure
