Dr. Elizabeth Nelson is an associate professor of medical humanities and health studies at Indiana University, Indianapolis. A historian of medicine, she studies rehabilitative institutions such as mental hospitals and prisons. She is currently completing a book about the 1994 closure of Indiana’s Central State psychiatric hospital and is a cofounder of FIRE (Formerly Incarcerated, Radically Empowered), an organization that seeks to address mental health after incarceration.
