Sponsored by the Academy of Correctional Health Professionals
The COVID-19 pandemic has been described by many as a “warlike” condition impacting nearly every aspect of life and possibly contributing to post-traumatic stress disorder for many in the United States. The far-reaching effects will continue to evolve even as we slowly emerge from a year of personal challenges, mitigation measures, illness, and death. This presentation will explore the medical, behavioral health, and legal impacts of the pandemic on those who were confined and those who provided for their safety and security. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the effects of the pandemic and ways to address its ongoing impact and consequences.
Educational objectives:
- Review lessons learned from management of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. military with application to correctional environments
- Describe the impact and results of pandemic stress and collective trauma on those living and working in correctional settings
- Discuss the legal aspects of the pandemic for correctional patients and staff and explore the emerging issues headed to our courts
