Shared governance, a model of shared decision making that gives nurses autonomy over their practice, has existed in many community health care organizations for years but has rarely been practiced in the correctional setting. California Correctional Health Care Services implemented a shared governance initiative in its nursing services to support a strategic goal of structural empowerment, providing a framework in which nurses at all levels can investigate, develop, implement, and evaluate standards of practice and care.
