Name
429 Gabapentinoids: Overview, Safety, and Risks*
Description

Participants will learn the indications and risks of gabapentinoids, especially among the incarcerated population. Once thought to be a safer choice than opioids, gabapentinoids are associated with increased opioid-related mortality when used in combination with opioids. Total daily doses of gabapentinoids affect mortality risks when opioids are coprescribed. The high prevalence of opioid use disorder should be considered before gabapentinoids are prescribed. Shared decision making may impact mortality risks.

Educational Objectives

  • Review basic pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, indications, risks, and benefits of gabapentinoids
  • Describe the significant mortality risks associated with gabapentinoids when used in combination with opioids
  • Identify safe prescribing practices of gabapentinoids in the incarcerated population
