The U.S. military developed the SBAR (situation, background, assessment, recommendations) tool for use on nuclear submarines to clearly convey concise and relevant information during critical situations. The Joint Commission adapted this tool in a successful effort to enhance the safety of hospital operations. The SBAR process can easily be adapted to optimize the performance of multidisciplinary teams working to ensure the efficient, effective, and safe management of individuals in jails.
