405 Ethical Challenges of Dual Loyalty in Professional Practice*
Description

This educational session will address dual loyalty, defined as clinical role conflict between the health worker's professional duties to the patient and expressed or implied obligations to the interests of parties such as the government, insurer, or employer. The presenters will examine the unique challenges health care professionals encounter when acting in the best interest of the patient conflicts with institutional policies or culture. Using case scenarios, the presenters will examine common beliefs and current standards and identify strategies and tools for effective collaboration with custody staff and other law enforcement professionals.

  • Describe the health professional's challenge to do no harm within a carceral environment
  • Identify barriers to providing patient well-being centered health care within a dual loyalty structure
  • Discuss strategies for collaboration between health professionals, custody, and administration to encourage accountability and integrity
