The use of computerized tomography scans has become a standard diagnostic test for trauma patients. However, CT scans expose patients to radiation. We hypothesized that incarcerated patients with acute traumatic injury have increased rates of CT utilization compared to the general population with similar traumatic injuries. A retrospective analysis of trauma patients at a Level I trauma center in San Bernardino County noted no increased CT utilization compared to the general population in acute traumatic injury, indicating that this this vulnerable population was not subjected to higher radiation exposure.
