Dr. Michael E. Corum graduated from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1986 with a DMD degree. He was in private practice from 1986 to 2012, during which time he studied endodontics with Dr. Steve Buchanon in Santa Barbara, CA, and implant placement and restoration with Dr. Norman Cranin at New York University School of Dentistry. Once aware of the extensive needs in the Correctional Health Care System, Dr. Corum began working with the Alabama Department of Corrections in October of 2012 and became affiliated with Mid America Health, headquartered in Greenwood, IN in 2018, when they were awarded the contract for dental services for the department.  Dr. Corum was appointed Statewide Director for Mid America Health in 2019 and continued in that position until December of 2022 when he was appointed Clinical Director for the company. Dr. Corum achieved CCHP certification in 2023. The mission of Mid America Health is to provide quality dental services to the underserved population in correctional facilities. Starting in Indiana in 1986, the company now provides dental services to state facilities, county jails, and Department of Juvenile Justice facilities in eight states. The company's  awareness of the need for changes in the use and prescribing practices of antibiotics, not only in correctional health care, but in the general population as well, is the inspiration for this presentation on antibiotic stewardship.
