Description

The older and aging patient population is the fastest growing group in U.S. correctional settings, with growth rates projected to continue to rise. It is essential for medical, mental health, and administrative correctional professionals to be informed of the unique issues impacting management of this vulnerable population. This session will offer suggestions to meet these challenges based on geriatric psychiatry principles and their translation to a correctional setting.

Educational Objectives
  • Review the epidemiology of the elderly incarcerated population and prevalence of comorbid medical and mental health conditions
  • Discuss psychotropic medication management and principles as applied to the geriatric population
  • Examine potential environmental interventions in the custodial setting beyond pharmacotherapy
