Name
150 Preventing Tuberculosis Outbreaks in Corrections
Description

The incidence of tuberculosis among people in correctional facilities is higher than in the general population; although infrequent, large TB outbreaks have been documented in state prison systems. Incarcerated people should be regularly evaluated for TB, and whenever a case is detected, investigations and control measures to stop transmission should be swiftly implemented. New regimens can shorten treatment for both latent TB infection and TB disease.

Educational Objectives
  • Describe the incidence of tuberculosis disease in the United States and among incarcerated persons
  • Discuss how to develop setting-specific guidance for preventing and stopping TB transmission in correctional facilities
  • Review recommended testing modalities for latent TB infection and new and shorter treatment regimens for LTBI and TB disease

Level: Basic
