Review of Medicaid claims data found that, on average, Louisiana Medicaid fee-for-service pays million annually for hospitalizations of incarcerated adults that last 24 or more hours. Fee-for-service Medicaid dollars come from the state general fund and have no bearing on the health care budget for the state prison system or sheriffs' offices. This study concludes that preventing hospitalizations would save the state money.
