121c Expanding Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Jails and Prisons*
Description
One in four overdose deaths occur among individuals currently or recently released from corrections, with incarceration and reentry significantly increasing overdose risk. Methadone and buprenorphine reduce mortality postrelease, yet treatment rates remain below 15%. This session will address stigma, fear of diversion, and lack of medical expertise as barriers to scaling treatment and highlight the potential for dramatic overdose reductions with broader implementation.
