Name
401 The Myth of the Noncompliant Patient*+
Description

Are your numbers for uncontrolled chronic care conditions higher than you'd like because patients aren’t participating in their care plans? It can be tempting to write off those patients as “noncompliant” and blame them for their own poor health outcomes, or to blame yourself for a failure to get through to them. But neither of those conclusions is entirely valid or solution-oriented. In this talk, we will cover data-driven strategies for connecting with and convincing patients, including a discussion of the mere exposure effect and the importance of learning to trade what’s “best” for other options that offer a potential path to success.

Educational Objectives

Analyze common causes of patient noncompliance

Describe the mere exposure hypothesis and how it can be used to promote patient compliance

Discuss methods to include patients in decision-making processes and improve investment in their care plans
